Since 1993, Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary is a no-kill animal rescue group dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of homeless and abused cats and dogs, throughout the Sacramento area. Needy animals are rescued, nurtured, and provided shelter and medical care (including spaying and neutering) before being placed in safe, loving, permanent homes. After adoption, Happy Tails animals may be returned at any time, no questions asked.
Happy Tails has helped close to 20,000 animals – including rescue and placement of domestic cats and dogs, trap/spay/neuter of feral cats, assisting our community and encouraging responsible treatment of animals. In addition, an even higher number of unwanted animal births were prevented by spay/neuter, making a major contribution in the reduction of the local cat and dog over population problem.
Adult cats are up for adoption at the Happy Tails “Patricia L. Holmes Adoption Center” in East Sacramento. Cats, kittens and often dogs are also cared for in our network of foster homes, and put up for adoption on the weekends at the PetSmart at Watt and Arden.
Happy Tails is 99% volunteer run by more than 200 dedicated volunteers. Assistance programs help the pets of elderly, homeless and low-income individuals. Through our extensive feral cat program, Happy Tails maintains several altered, healthy feral cat colonies. This effort is one more step in helping to solve the Sacramento area’s serious pet overpopulation problem.
Funding includes monetary donations from our dedicated and generous benefactors, as well as grants, bequests, fundraising events and adoption fees. Federal and state tax authorities recognize Happy Tails as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation.
Happy Tails is the only cage-free, no kill animal shelter in the Sacramento region. Run ninety percent by volunteers, Happy Tails provides a lifelong commitment to its pets and to improving the lives of pets in the Sacramento area.
I have been a volunteer for 11 years, Happy Tails volunteers put their blood, sweat and tears into making sure these cats and dogs get the best chance at a happy life. I wouldn't want to volunteer any where else.
